About

Jon Rajkovich makes sculpture that resonates with life and movement. His material and
process oriented approach is loosely coupled with a broad range of sources that inform
his work, from standing stones to his experiences as a former competitive swimmer.
Rajkovich’s interpretation of sculpture is fluid: he uses found and fabricated objects,
video, site–specific installation, drawing, and choreography as a means to explore
interactions between the found and formal, rhythmic and erratic, and various notions of
completeness. In doing so, his works act as an index of physical and psychological
engagements over a period of time. By objectifying the creative process, he creates works
that also locate meaning within their formation.

The movement conveyed in Rajkovich’s static sculpture begins where the process of its
own becoming is made evident, and continues throughout the work. Sometimes this
arrangement reflects an otherworldly and imaginative approach, sealing an object from an external situation entirely with color, for example; and, at other times, his sculptures are charged with a crude elegance, where hints of unresolvedness are maintained and choices are revealed to reflect the complexities of the world as it is.

Rajkovich’s attention to diverse materials and craft reward the attentive viewer. His work
draws upon the legacy of modern sculpture–all while evoking an emotive freedom
inherent to Abstract Expressionism. The forms within the artwork become a set of
elements that have been removed from their original contexts and arranged in a way that
begin new points of departure. Most often, and in the case of these works, the creative
process comes first, and the way in which the work is imagined and understood then
begins to present itself.
